Christmas Traditions

There are so many great Christmas traditions out there now.  We do "elf on the shelf" and we always go to look at Christmas lights, but what I want to know is what traditions you do to keep the focus on Jesus's birthday?
For the past 2 years, we have a little birthday party for Jesus.  Typically, I would make cupcakes, but this year was a little hectic and we just had to make due with a cookie.

We also go to a candlelight service every Christmas Eve.  This year, we went to my old church back home.  I really loved going with my family.
What Christmas traditions do you have and how to you remind your kids that it's more about Jesus's birthday and less about presents from Santa?

Christmas Highlights 2013

This was the year we spend most of our time with Chris's family.  So...we don't have a lot of pictures of the kids playing with their toys since they haven't really had time.  We did manage to get some good family pictures though:

Me with my nephew, Aidan.  I love that kid.

The Nahas boys

The Nahas girls

Pax loves his Nana.  We are thankful she is doing well after her surgery last week.  Can you believe she had 3 brain tumors removed 1 week ago?

Pax loves his Dusty Crophopper pop-up tent

Night Road- Book Review

For a mother, life comes down to a series of choices.
To hold on…
To let go..
To forget…
To forgive…
Which road will you take?
                                                            Night Road
For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers.  When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude.  Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend.  Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.
Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way.  It has always been easy-- until senior year of high school.  Suddenly she is at a loss.  Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.
On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives.  In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything.  In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.
Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, NIGHT ROAD raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness.  It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope.  This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.

I'm going to divide this review into 2 parts--like the book.  First, I want to say, I loved this book.  It was a great and thought provoking story that many people can relate to.
Part 1- Before
Jude was a self described "helicopter parent".  She hovered over her children....protecting them, putting them first, and doing whatever she could to make them happy.  I could really relate to her as a parent.  I, too, am over protective.  I love my kids more than I could have ever imagined loving anyone or anything.  I would do anything to protect them so I understand her parenting style.
When Lexi and Mia became best friends, Jude welcomed her with open arms.  I appreciated her kindness and willingness to treat this girl as family; knowing that she has been through so much.  It made me really love Jude.

Part 2- After
I'm going to do my best not to give away all of the "twists" in the book, but while also giving my opinion.  When Mia dies; Jude becomes a different person.  She is angry, depressed, and full of grief.  She wants someone to pay and cannot figure out how to show love to the rest of her family.  I really related to some of her feelings.  In one section she said she was a "mother of twins who only had 1 child.".  I too, have felt that way and while our situations were very different...the emotion and grief is the same.  She also said, "how could she make them understand that they woman they knew was gone.  She wasn't the woman they befriended anymore."  I totally get that.  Losing a child changes you...sometimes for the better...sometimes not.  I think it made me a better person in many ways, but still different nonethelesss.

In this book, Jude had trouble with forgiveness.  I think this is largely due to the fact that she was not religious. When I lost Parker, I was ok (as ok as 1 can be) because I know and take comfort in the fact that Parker is in Heaven.  Jude did not have that comfort.  Nor, did she know how to forgive.  Six years passed before she was able to start the process of forgiveness.  Part 2 of the book really focuses on her anger.  It also shows the struggle that Zach deals with in losing his twin sister.  It made me wonder...did Mia (my Mia) experience those feelings too?  Does she feel like a part of her is missing?

Overall, I really enjoyed the book.  It gave me a lot to think about.  It also makes me wonder...how would I have reacted?  Would I have forgiven easier?  I'd like to think yes, but honestly...I'm not sure.  That is something I struggle with, especially when it comes to my kids.

MIL Update

I made a prayer request earlier this week for my MIL.  I wanted to post a quick update.  She is doing well.  They removed 3 of the 4 tumors (the 4th was very small and they will get it with radiation).  Currently, they are doing a biopsy to see where they originated.  There is a good chance it is from the breast as she had breast cancer a few years ago.  Please keep her in your prayers.
Thanks!

The Testing- Book Review

Amazon Description:
It’s graduation day for sixteen-year-old Malencia Vale, and the entire Five Lakes Colony (the former Great Lakes) is celebrating. All Cia can think about—hope for—is whether she’ll be chosen for The Testing, a United Commonwealth program that selects the best and brightest new graduates to become possible leaders of the slowly revitalizing post-war civilization. When Cia is chosen, her father finally tells her about his own nightmarish half-memories of The Testing. Armed with his dire warnings (”Cia, trust no one”), she bravely heads off to Tosu City, far away from friends and family, perhaps forever. Danger, romance—and sheer terror—await.

I picked this book up because it sounded good and it was on sale for $2.99.  It was a GREAT find!  I would have paid much more.  This book is as good as Divergent and the Hunger Games!  I could not put it down.  The story had great twists and Cia was a very likeable character.  The only downside is it leaves you wanting more.  Book 2 comes up January 7, 2014 and book three comes out in June of 2014.

Sunday School Pagent

Sunday was a fun day - minus the food that Pax kicked over on the living room floor.  That was not fun.  But anyway...we went to church in the morning to practice for the pagent that night.  Might I just add....every year it is so disorganized!  The control freak in me goes crazy.  Part of me wants to take it over and "do it right", but I know I don't have the time right now.  But anyway....that afternoon, we had fun at home.

I love these 2 so much.

Me..and my shadow.  He is such a Mama's boy.  His face is chapped from the wind/cold.

Mia did AWESOME!  We could hear her singing her song.  It was so precious.  I'm not at all biased :).

Pax is such a ham!  He didn't sing (though he says he did), but he did pose for pictures and smile the whole time.

Seriously...this kid kills me.

After, we had refreshments and played with friends.  We are lucky to have a great group of younger families with really sweet kids.

Is this not adorable?  My heart was exploding.

Prayer Request

My Mother in Law went to the hospital yesterday with dizziness and they found 4 nodules in her brain as well as some bleeding.  She has been admitted to Johns Hopkins and will have a PET Scan today to determine if it is metastic cancer (she is a breast cancer survivor).  The plan as of now is to operate tomorrow to remove the largest tumor.  Please pray that it is not cancer and that the surgery will be successful and recovery will be quick and easy.
Thank you!!!
